5th Grade Assemblages

JOSEPH CORNELL


This month 5th grade students will study the assemblages of Joseph Cornell, Beyte Saar,  Jasper Johns as well as Mexican Retablos. 

Joseph Cornell is best known for his creations of shadow boxes that he filled with photographs and found objects.

Betye Irene Saar is an American artist, know for her work in the field of assemblages.
 Saar was apart of the black arts movement in the 1970s challenging myths and stereotypes. Her works addressed racism and inequality for blacks and for women.

Students will use personal objects from home in combination with photographic collage to create their own assemblage. See photos of the process below!

Here is a picture of the finished product!

Objects brought in may be copied and the original can be taken home. 
Students may bring in fun photos in addition to taking photos in class.
Think about objects from home that can take on a new meaning when placed inside the box!
