Picasso's Animals

This Semester our 5th graders are going to study works by Pablo Picasso to gain an understanding of how creativity leads to the discovery and expression of new ideas.
We will focus on his relationships with animals and their symbolism in his works.
Fifth graders will experiment with the process of monoprint and collage and will look to Picasso for inspiration.

Above is a photograph of Picasso with his dog Lump.
Lump means rascal
in German. Picasso made several portraits of Lump.
It is said that Picasso had many dogs but Lump was his favorite.

Pablo Picasso what quite the animal lover. He owned many pets during his lifetime including cats, dogs, birds and even a goat named Esmerelda.  Animals are the theme of many of his works in both paintings and sculptures.

What animals were the inspiration for the painting and the vase below?

Pablo had several pet cats.

Picasso used the owl often in his work. The Owl is the sacred bird of Athena in ancient Greek Mythology. Picasso kept many birds in his home including a pet owl.
